Can I Take the Trinity CertTESOL? A Guide to Eligibility, Degrees, and English Levels

The dream of traveling the world, immersing yourself in new cultures, and making a genuine impact through education is a powerful one. If you’ve been researching how to make this a reality, you’ve likely come across the Trinity CertTESOL.

As one of the most prestigious and internationally recognized qualifications in the world, it is the "gold standard" for anyone looking to start a career in English language teaching. However, a common question we receive from our applicants is: "Am I actually eligible to take it?"

There are many myths surrounding TEFL certification; specifically regarding who can and cannot teach. Let’s clear the air and look at the actual requirements for the Trinity CertTESOL.

1. Do I Need a University Degree for a TEFL Course?

A common misconception is that you must already have a university degree to enroll in a TEFL course.

For the Trinity CertTESOL, the formal requirement is that you possess the qualifications necessary to enter Higher Education (University) in your home country.

  • In the UK: This usually means 2 A-levels.

  • In the USA/International: A high school diploma or equivalent.

While many employers (and visa offices in countries like Thailand, China, or South Korea) do require a degree for work permits, you can successfully complete your Trinity CertTESOL without one. We regularly welcome current university students looking to get a head start on their careers, as well as adults from Australia and beyond seeking a professional change. This makes our course an ideal choice for anyone wanting to secure a prestigious qualification before graduating or transitioning to a new field. Furthermore, because our TEFL course is regulated by the UK’s Ofqual as a Level 5 qualification, the units you complete can be transferred as academic credits at universities throughout the UK.

2. English Proficiency: It’s Not Just for Native Speakers

One of the most important things to understand is that the Trinity CertTESOL is not limited to native English speakers.

In fact, some of the best teachers in the world are those who learned English as a second language themselves. They understand the mechanics of the language and the struggles of the students firsthand.

What is the required level?

To succeed on the course, non-native speakers generally need a proficiency level equivalent to C1 (Advanced) on the CEFR scale. This is roughly equivalent to an IELTS score of 7.0 or 7.5. You need to be able to model the language accurately and handle the academic rigors of the course assignments.

For our course, you will be interviewed by one of our trainers and they will assess whether your English skills are at the required academic level to be able to successfully complete all sections of the course. So, it might be best for you to submit the application to us first and get interviewed by our trainers instead of worrying about your suitability.

3. Experience: Start from Zero

You do not need a single day of teaching experience to take this course. The Trinity CertTESOL is an initial teaching qualification. It is specifically designed to take you from a complete novice to a confident, classroom-ready professional.

Many of our graduates had no teaching experience when they studied our course and then have now become outstanding teachers. For example, Aaron, an engineer from New Zealand, came to learn our course in Thailand and then worked with Tesoltree for couple of years in Kanchanaburi and Chonburi before moving to teach in East Asia as a next phase of his life. Further, Tiarnan from the UK came to Thailand from the UK having never taught before, but decided to complete our CertTESOL course while teaching at a placement school in the north east of the country; he then moved to work in a more prestigious school closer to the beach after graduating.
