The Trinity CertTESOL Interview: What to Expect and How to Prepare

5 min read

After submitting your application to TesolTree, you will receive a pre-interview task by email and arrange an online interview with one of our Trinity CertTESOL trainers. The complete process normally takes three to five days from submitting the form to attending the interview, although this depends on how quickly you return the task and when you are available to meet. The process helps us understand your readiness for the course while giving you an opportunity to decide whether it suits your goals and circumstances.

Complete the Pre-Interview Task

The pre-interview task gives your trainer an initial understanding of your written English, language awareness and ability to explain your reasoning. It is not designed to test whether you already know how to teach. The Trinity CertTESOL is an initial teacher-training qualification suitable for people with little or no previous teaching experience.

Complete every part independently and explain your answers as fully as you can. One common issue our trainers notice is that applicants sometimes identify that a sentence is incorrect without explaining why. The explanation is valuable because it helps the trainer understand how you analyse language and communicate your thinking.

For this reason, we do not provide model answers to the task. Trying to predict or copy a perfect response would prevent the trainer from understanding your current abilities. Honest answers give us a much better basis for deciding how ready you are and what support you may need.

Why Does TesolTree Interview Trinity CertTESOL Applicants?

The Trinity CertTESOL combines academic study, language analysis, written assignments, collaboration and observed teaching practice with real learners. The interview helps the trainer assess whether an applicant appears ready to manage these different demands.

It is also useful for you. You can discuss how the course is organised, how teaching practice works, how much time you may need and whether the Fully Online or Blended route would suit you. Think of the interview as a two-way professional conversation, rather than a list of questions for which you must give only correct answers.

TesolTree is not looking for someone who already knows everything about English teaching. Our trainers are looking for trainees with the potential to learn, participate constructively and develop through training and feedback.

Attend Your Trinity CertTESOL Interview

The interview takes place online, normally through Zoom, and usually lasts approximately 30–60 minutes. One of our Trinity CertTESOL trainers will discuss your pre-interview task, experience, motivation and plans with you.

What the Trainer Is Assessing

The conversation helps the trainer consider several connected areas of readiness:

  • Your spoken English and ability to explain your ideas clearly

  • Your written responses and general English-language awareness

  • Your motivation for teaching and desire to improve your skills

  • Your readiness for the academic and practical demands of the course

  • Your ability to organise your time and meet deadlines

  • Your willingness to work collaboratively and give and receive feedback

Applicants need a high level of English to manage the course’s assignments, language analysis and practical teaching requirements. Trinity College London advises that people who use English as a second or additional language should normally demonstrate ability at CEFR C1 level.

TesolTree does not normally require an IELTS or TOEFL certificate. Instead, our trainers assess whether your English is sufficient for the course through your pre-interview task and online interview. English does not need to be your first language, and TesolTree has graduates from a wide range of linguistic and national backgrounds.

Alongside your present ability, attitude matters. Our trainers appreciate applicants who show a genuine desire to succeed, are excited about developing as English-language teachers and are prepared to learn from the course.

What the Interview Is Not

You do not need to approach the conversation like a competitive job interview. In particular, it is:

  • Not an assessment for a teaching position

  • Not an expectation that you already know how to plan and teach lessons

  • Not a test that requires rehearsed or “perfect” answers

It is better to explain your actual goals, experience and concerns than to give answers you think the trainer wants to hear. This helps both sides make an informed decision.

Questions Applicants Should Consider Asking

Applicants frequently want to know how the course is organised, how teaching practice is completed and how many hours they will need. The interview is a suitable time to discuss these practical concerns.

  • What study pace would be realistic for my weekly availability?

  • How is observed teaching practice with real learners organised?

  • When must I choose between Fully Online and Blended teaching practice?

  • How much trainer support will be available during the course?

  • When could I realistically begin my teaching practice?

  • How should I prepare before starting Stage 1?

You can review the Trinity CertTESOL course structure beforehand, but you are welcome to ask for clarification about anything that remains uncertain.

How to Prepare Without Overpreparing

Good preparation means arriving ready for an open and useful conversation. It does not mean memorising answers.

  • Complete every section of the pre-interview task independently.

  • Explain your reasoning instead of giving only short answers.

  • Review the course structure and note anything you want clarified.

  • Consider how many hours you can realistically study each week.

  • Think about why you want to teach English or improve your existing teaching.

  • Prepare a few questions about the course and teaching practice.

  • Check your internet connection, camera and microphone before the meeting.

  • Be honest about your experience, responsibilities and concerns.

No additional documents are required to begin the process. You only need to complete the online application form, followed by the task and interview.

Receive the Decision and Next Steps

After the interview, Tesoltree will confirm the outcome and may contact you if further discussion is needed. If you are accepted, you will receive an offer with enrolment and payment instructions. After making your Stage 1 payment, you will receive access to the Moodle learning platform and can begin your coursework.

It normally takes approximately three to five days from submitting your application form to attending the interview. The actual timing depends on when you complete the pre-interview task and which interview appointment you choose.

Do I Need Teaching Experience Before the Interview?

No previous teaching experience is necessary. The Trinity CertTESOL is designed as an initial teacher-training qualification, although experienced teachers can also take it to formalise and develop their skills.

The application, task and interview process is the same for both routes. You can discuss the differences with your trainer and consider which teaching-practice format is more appropriate for you.
